US President Joe Biden to Attend G20 Summit in India

The White House has announced that US President Joe Biden will travel to India next week to participate in the G20 Summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 8. India, as the President of the G20, will host global leaders for the Summit scheduled to take place on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi.

Commending Modi’s Leadership

During the Summit, President Biden will commend Prime Minister Modi for his leadership of the G20, recognizing India’s pivotal role in hosting this important international gathering. The White House has expressed its appreciation for Modi’s efforts in guiding the G20’s initiatives and agenda.

On September 7, President Biden will travel to New Delhi to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit. The following day, he will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi, where they are expected to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest.

G20 Summit Agenda

On September 9 and 10, the President will be actively engaged in the G20 summit, joining other world leaders in addressing pressing global challenges. These challenges include:

  • The clean energy transition
  • Combatting climate change
  • Addressing the economic and social impacts of the conflict in Ukraine
  • Increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank, to fight poverty and address global challenges

While in New Delhi, President Biden will take the opportunity to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the G20 as the premier forum for economic cooperation. The G20, or Group of 20, is an intergovernmental forum comprising the world’s major developed and developing economies. Its member countries collectively represent approximately 85 percent of global GDP, over 75 percent of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s population. The G20 plays a critical role in shaping global economic policies and addressing key challenges.

Future Engagement

Following his time in India, President Biden will travel to Hanoi, Vietnam, on September 10. While in Hanoi, he will meet with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other key leaders to explore ways to enhance cooperation between the United States and Vietnam.

The discussions will focus on:

  • Promoting the growth of a technology-focused and innovation-driven Vietnamese economy
  • Expanding people-to-people ties through education exchanges and workforce development programs
  • Combating climate change
  • Increasing peace, prosperity, and stability in the region

This visit to Vietnam underscores the United States’ commitment to strengthening partnerships and fostering positive developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
