Roaring Success of G20 Summit

Following the resounding success of the recent G20 summit in Delhi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction in an exclusive interview with CNN-Smartkhabrinews. He highlighted the complexity of hosting such a high-profile event and emphasized the achievement of getting 20 influential countries to reach a consensus on crucial global issues during challenging times.

Jaishankar remarked, “We had a sense that eventually we would get there…It was never done till it was done, and it kept coming closer and closer…It was kind of a live-action till the very end.” He also noted that last year, Indonesia faced similar pressure when it held the G20 presidency and appreciated India’s support, sending a strong message of unity among member nations.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Discussing the Russia-Ukraine conflict that began last February, Jaishankar emphasized the need to assess the purpose of G20 gatherings. He questioned whether these meetings should reiterate a fixed position or adapt to evolving developments and concerns. He stressed the importance of capturing the totality of global happenings, especially for issues of global significance.

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)

India has established the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a response to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Jaishankar highlighted the growing awareness in India and Europe regarding the economic benefits of collaboration. He also emphasized the strategic importance of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula in this corridor, considering it a significant development in world history.

Green Climate Fund

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged a record $2 billion to the Green Climate Fund during the G20 summit in Delhi, underscoring the urgency of climate action. Jaishankar expressed hope for increased resources for green and sustainable development beyond the summit.

Global South’s Concerns

India, leveraging its G20 presidency and economic influence, has become a voice to bridge the North-South divide in global issues. Jaishankar acknowledged that countries in the Global South have their own concerns, which should not be overshadowed by East-West friction. He stressed the importance of addressing the conflicts that cause anxiety in the Global South.

China’s Role in the G20 Summit

China played a significant role in the G20 summit negotiations. Jaishankar highlighted the collective effort of all 20 member nations in overcoming differences and finding common ground on various issues, showcasing wisdom and foresight in their discussions.
