Reddit is leveling up its global accessibility. The platform has announced key updates to its AI-powered translation system, now including support for Hindi, with Bengali next in line. These changes aim to make Reddit more inclusive and seamless for multilingual users.
AI-Powered Translation Gets a Multilingual Boost
Back in September 2024, Reddit introduced a machine learning (ML) tool designed to automatically translate posts and comments based on user language preferences. Initially rolled out across 35 countries and multiple languages, the feature is now expanding its reach in South Asia.
As per Reddit’s latest blog update, users can now access content in Hindi—one of India’s most widely spoken languages. Bengali support is reportedly “coming soon,” broadening access to key linguistic communities. To use this tool, users can simply tap the translate icon in the overflow menu on both the website and mobile app. This action translates their entire Reddit feed into their selected language.
Notably, Reddit isn’t stopping at passive reading. Users can also write new posts and leave comments in their native tongue. The system then auto-translates their content into the primary language of the targeted subreddit. A small banner flags that the post has been translated, maintaining transparency across the platform.
Upgraded Features Aim to Improve Search and Engagement
Beyond translations, Reddit is enhancing its internal search engine to support multilingual queries. This means users typing in Hindi, Bengali, or any supported language will now receive more relevant, localized search results—without needing to switch to English.
However, Reddit’s new AI chatbot, dubbed “Answers,” is still English-only. Launched recently in India, the chatbot is designed to summarize threads and answer user questions using insights from Reddit’s vast content archive. It’s currently in testing and only pulls data from Reddit communities, but its utility is expected to grow as language capabilities expand.
This move underscores a broader industry trend: platforms increasingly leveraging AI to personalize and localize user experiences. For Reddit, expanding translation tools could drive higher engagement from non-English-speaking users and make content discovery more inclusive.
While the AI translation tools are still evolving, early indicators suggest they’re helping break down language barriers—especially in markets like India where linguistic diversity is immense. As more languages are added, Reddit may well position itself as a truly global forum for authentic discussion.
