In a landmark move promoting holistic well-being, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced plans to introduce yoga into the state’s school curriculum and public health initiatives. Speaking at a state-level event for International Yoga Day 2025, held at Kalinga Stadium, Majhi emphasized that yoga is a pathway to a healthier, more self-sufficient India.

Yoga in Education and Public Health: A Holistic Vision for Odisha

Highlighting the long-standing value of yoga, the chief minister noted that it’s not merely a physical activity—it nourishes the body, sharpens the mind, and uplifts the soul. He revealed the state’s intention to roll out yoga awareness programs in schools, colleges, hostels, and sports centers. These initiatives will encourage young learners and communities to embrace wellness as a way of life.

“Yoga helps us live healthier, more disciplined lives,” Majhi said. “We are moving toward making it a part of everyday education and community health, creating long-term impact across generations.”

Notably, over 10,000 participants—including ministers, lawmakers, students, and civil servants—gathered for the event. The large turnout reflects growing public interest in yoga and its role in preventive healthcare.

Celebrating International Yoga Day: A Cultural and Global Statement

Since being elevated to global prominence by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, yoga has gained international recognition. The United Nations officially declared June 21 as International Yoga Day, making it a worldwide celebration of wellness and harmony.

This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”, emphasizes the deep connection between personal health and environmental well-being. Chief Minister Majhi echoed this sentiment, stating that yoga fosters a respectful, balanced lifestyle that benefits both individuals and the planet.

The celebrations included a performance of Odisha’s traditional Gotipu dance and a symbolic tribute by Padma Shri-awarded sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik. His sculpture of PM Modi in Ustrasana (Camel Pose), created on Puri beach, blended cultural pride with yoga’s global significance.

Meanwhile, Odisha’s Department of Sports and Youth Services continues to lead the charge by promoting yoga as a lifestyle choice for the masses. The inclusion of yoga in schools and health programs is expected to deepen awareness and ensure long-term adoption of wellness habits across the state.
