In a major update for aspiring postgraduate medical students, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) has officially rescheduled the NEET PG 2025 exam to August 3, following a pivotal Supreme Court directive. The decision to hold the exam in a single shift aims to ensure greater fairness and transparency across all test-takers nationwide.

Why NEET PG 2025 Was Rescheduled and Shifted to Single Session

Originally planned for June 15 in two shifts, the NEET PG 2025 exam will now take place in a single shift format. This move comes after a Supreme Court bench—comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and N.K. Anjaria—noted that split shifts compromised the exam’s uniformity and fairness. The Court stated that differing difficulty levels across shifts undermine the principle of a level playing field for candidates.

“The examination body should have ensured a single-shift format to maintain parity,” the bench observed, underscoring that last year’s two-shift setup was an exception due to unique circumstances.

New City Selection Process and Expanded Exam Centers

With the exam now consolidated into one shift, the NBE has expanded the list of test cities. Candidates must re-select their preferred exam location through a fresh online application form, which opens on June 13 at 3:00 PM and closes on June 17 at 11:55 PM. City allotment will follow a first-come, first-served basis, and candidates will only see cities with available seats.

To accommodate all participants, the computer-based exam will be administered in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Over 1,000 test centers across 250 cities will be activated, involving around 60,000 personnel—from site supervisors and system operators to lab managers and electricians.

The NBE’s official site advises all applicants to act promptly in updating their exam city preference, as availability is dynamic and limited. The new test schedule promises a more streamlined and equitable experience for over 200,000 medical graduates expected to appear this year.

What This Means for NEET PG Aspirants

Switching to a single shift not only simplifies logistics but also boosts credibility in the exam’s fairness. For candidates, this change reduces variability and potential advantage based on test timing, aligning with global best practices for competitive exams.

That said, students should mark their calendars for the June 13–17 window to lock in their preferred test city. Missing this deadline could significantly impact where and how smoothly they sit for the exam.
