In a groundbreaking step toward futuristic urban living, a residential community in South Bengaluru has become the first in the region to adopt drone-based delivery for groceries and essentials.

Prestige Falcon City Embraces Next-Gen Logistics

Residents of Prestige Falcon City, one of the largest gated communities in Bengaluru, now receive daily essentials—including groceries, medicines, and household items—delivered via drone. The initiative is a result of a strategic partnership between BigBasket and drone logistics firm Skye Air Mobility.

The drones operate between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., efficiently dropping off packages that weigh up to 7 kilograms. Importantly, customers do not incur any extra charges for drone delivery. Once the drone arrives at the apartment complex, staff members handle the final leg of delivery to individual households.

This new logistics model replaces multiple daily trips made by ground delivery agents, effectively easing internal traffic flow and streamlining order fulfillment. It’s an early glimpse of how future market trends could reshape urban retail and quick commerce logistics.

How It Works—and What’s Next

All orders placed by Prestige Falcon City residents are routed through a BigBasket hub located within a 5 km radius. From there, drones managed by Skye Air—approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)—take over. Operating on satellite-based navigation within pre-defined 3D flight corridors, the drones ensure precise, camera-free deliveries in real-time.

According to Avinash HV, President of the Bengaluru Apartment Federation South and a key member of the community’s Resident Welfare Association, the initiative was designed with three goals in mind: faster service, improved operational efficiency, and a meaningful reduction in in-community traffic congestion.

“We wanted to stop the repeated entries and exits of multiple delivery agents,” he noted. “Now, it’s streamlined and secure.”

Skye Air’s batching system also allows multiple orders to be grouped together, maximizing delivery capacity and minimizing turnaround time—a crucial feature for the fast-paced quick commerce segment. CEO Ankit Kumar revealed the drones are already handling between 40 and 50 orders per day, and the company plans to scale up quickly.

Scaling Up: 20 More Societies on the Horizon

The success at Prestige Falcon City is just the beginning. Plans are already in motion to expand the drone delivery model to at least 20 more apartment complexes in Bengaluru within the next three months. This move could set a new benchmark for how gated communities across India manage last-mile logistics.

As demand for efficient, low-impact delivery grows, especially in high-density urban zones, drone logistics might well become a defining element of tomorrow’s city infrastructure—offering solutions not just for convenience, but for sustainable living too.
