Bengaluru is stepping up its game in urban mobility with the upcoming Metrolite rail system — a lighter, more affordable version of its traditional metro. Tailored for areas with lower footfall, this street-level solution promises smoother transit without the hefty infrastructure costs.

What Is the Metrolite and Why Now?

The Metrolite is a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system that aligns with the Indian government’s 2019 Metrolite guidelines. Designed by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL), it aims to address city traffic challenges where a full-scale metro isn’t viable. Think fewer construction hurdles, smaller trains, and reduced operating costs — all while covering crucial city stretches.

This system is set to integrate with the existing metro network using features like QR code ticketing and NFC-enabled smart payments, thanks to an enhanced Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system.

Proposed Corridors: Where Will the Metrolite Run?

As part of Bengaluru Metro’s Phase 3 expansion, three new at-grade Metrolite routes are currently in the planning phase:

Corridor Route
Line 1 ORR-West (Hebbal to JP Nagar)
Line 2 Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere
Line 3 Whitefield to Domlur

Meanwhile, a potential 52 km route from Katamanallur Gate (Hoskote) to Sarjapur Road via Hebbal is under preliminary study, though it’s yet to receive formal mapping or approval.

What Lies Ahead?

Currently, none of the proposed Metrolite corridors are under construction — final Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are pending. However, if the process stays on track, commuters might see these sleek new trains gliding through Bengaluru by 2027.

For those tracking market trends in urban infrastructure or eyeing how city planning adapts to growing demand, Bengaluru’s Metrolite project is one to watch. It’s a promising mix of innovation, cost-efficiency, and smarter urban connectivity.
