The Persistent Land Sinking Crisis in Himachal Pradesh

Despite a temporary respite from heavy rains, the sinking of land in remote villages of Rampur in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, remains a critical issue. Villagers whose houses have been rendered unsafe are fervently demanding relocation to more secure areas. The situation in the 12/20 area of the Rampur sub-division is dire, and Urman village in Munish panchayat has become entirely unsafe.

A Plea for Relocation

Gian Dasi, a resident of Urman, shared his harrowing experience. “My house has been completely destroyed, and I am now taking shelter under a tarpaulin sheet, living in constant fear of falling stones and snakes,” he said.

Kaul Negi, a former president of the Himachal Cooperative Federation, revealed, “In Urman, ten houses have already been reduced to ruins, and in Bahali village, two families find themselves shelterless.”

Mahendra Singh and Meera, residents of Urman, expressed their distress as well. Their house has suffered damage due to wide fissures in the land. Raj Kumari of Bahli lamented, “My house has been completely damaged, and I have nowhere to go.”

Awaiting Help and Rehabilitation

The affected residents are anxiously waiting for assistance and rehabilitation. They are appealing to the government to take immediate action and relocate them to safer places.

“The sinking land and the destruction of our homes have left us in a dire situation. We urgently need the government’s support to ensure our safety and well-being,” pleaded one resident.
